I’m 38 years old and a breast cancer survivor. Stops you cold doesn’t it? I was diagnosed at the beginning of this year and hope to close the year off as a winner, having beaten it back.
October 22nd I decided to create “The Giving Project”, my way of giving back; my way of thanking The Universe for giving me a second chance at life and being ever so grateful for it.
I chose to utilize my talents as a crafter. I crochet winter hats, scarves, mittens, socks, slippers and teddy bear clothing, sell them, and have decided to donate 100% of the profits to charity. The Mercury Phoenix Trust is one of the three charities I’ve chosen. And here’s why.
I was 18 years old when Freddie passed away, too young to appreciate his genius and also his struggle. Having faced my own serious illness I’ve searched for a role model; someone to “look up to” you could say. I found the music of Queen and Freddie’s story and have just been in awe. His prowess upon the stage was incredible. His struggle with AIDS was unimaginable. His strength was superhuman. His bravery unequalled anywhere. And his determination to not let AIDS rule his life until it began to win is an example for us all as to how to deal with adversity in the face of insurmountable odds. He has become something of a hero for me and for every bit I’ve read, I’ve fell more and more in awe of this incredible man.
Learning about what The Mercury Phoenix Trust is, how it was started, and what it does/has done for AIDS research around the world made it an easy choice for my fundraising endeavour. Freddie and I have much more in common than just battling serious illness and it’s time to have adequate funding to stop AIDS before it becomes a pandemic.
