The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert took place at Wembley Stadium on Easter Monday 20th April 1992. Artists from all over the world gave their services to pay tribute to Freddie’s life and career at this memorable concert. The concert was directed by David Mallet and was broadcast live worldwide to an estimated audience of 1.2 billion people. Fox Television broadcast the concert in America and Cindy Crawford flew in to be the American host. The ticket money from the Wembley event, together with the merchandising formed the initial funding of the Mercury Phoenix Trust. Since then the Mercury Phoenix Trust has benefitted from the release of the concert on VHS video and a special DVD which was released in April 2002 to celebrate the 10th year of the Trust and continues to sell all over the world.
There have been many requests to repeat the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert but Queen felt that it was a one-off event which should never be repeated and probably could never be surpassed.
