How do you commemorate the death of one of your idols? This was a question easily answered by Bristol based burlesque performer and show promoter, Tiger Tiger. Having grown up with music of Queen and been devastated by the death of Freddie Mercury in 1991, she knew she wanted to do something to commemorate the event.
Who Wants To Live Forever: A Charity Night of Queen-themed Burlesque was born.A year in the planning, the evening took place on Saturday November 26th and was a sell-out success – packing the venue, The Trinity Centre Bristol. With 193 tickets sold before the night, members of the public had to be turned away when the last of the tickets sold within minutes of doors opening.
The audience was treated to a variety of burlesque striptease acts and singers. The highlights of the evening included relative newcomer Violet Vayne’s burlesque tribute to Freddie Mercury; Delilah Lilac’s fun feline routine; headliner Lady Lace’s emotional act to Who Wants To Live Forever; and singing a cappella 1940s style harmony group The Dolly Mixtures – all performing to Freddie Mercury and Queen songs.
Show organiser and host Tiger Tiger could not give enough thanks at the end of the show: “All the performers did me proud – the audience responded so well to all of them! The venue has been amazing from the very booking onwards. So many people have helped with this show, and I am so appreciative of the wonderful audience coming and parting with their hard earned cash for such a good cause!”
Audience member Ruth Weatherly, commented – “what an incredible show, compered beautifully by Tiger Tiger. She supplied free air guitars and led us in song to Bohemian Rhapsody, there were even moustaches for us to buy! Such amazing performances and all for a worthwhile charity, it made me emotional!”
All the proceeds from the evening, including the on the night raffle, cake sale and moustache sale, will be donated to the Mercury Phoenix Trust AIDS Charity, and totalled more than £1500. The charity was set up in 1992 to distribute the funds made by the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert a year after the singer’s death. It continues to work around the world promoting the awareness of HIV and AIDS prevention as well as working with relief efforts.
